Class 5 Fly High In Trip To National Space Centre

It was the day of our trip on Wednesday 2nd March. We had won the trip when our class had entered a national competition and our entry had been selected as one of the best.

We had to be up early, but as we were going out for the day, we didn't mind. The coach left at quarter to nine and we prepared ourselves for an hour and a half journey.

When we arrived we went to the screen show, where we learned about planets and had a go at an interactive quiz. You sat down in these normal cinema chairs and they have four coloured buttons on the right arm of the chair. There's a screen over the ceiling and walls. They asked us a question and there were three possible answers. Each answer had a colour next to it and whichever answer you think it is, you press that colour. Then it shows you if you're right.

Next we went up on the "decks". There were games to play, buttons to press and lots more to do. We went up in the glass elevator to the next deck; you could see everything (not including the floor, so when you don't have a head for heights it doesn't help!!!). Lunch was at 12.45pm. After lunch we did a space workshop that included making and launching small rockets. We designed and named our fizzy flyers, and when launched they certainly flew sky high! ……….It was a great day!

Our School Book Fair

A few weeks ago our school had a very successful book fair. The parents and children helped us by buying lots of books, especially on Parents' Evenings - so thanks for that. The parents and children spent around £1300 in total and as the school gets 60% of all we sell, we've managed to achieve a fantastic total of £780 to spend on books for the school.

Bed and Breakfast Star By Jacqueline Wilson

Where do baby apes sleep?

In apricots!!!!

"I'm Elsa and that's one of my jokes. (I tell lots of jokes and I'm going to be a big star one day!) I do my best to cheer my family up, but no one seems to laugh much any more. Not since we lost our lovely house and had to move to a bed and breakfast hotel."

Elsa is 10 years old and lives with her mum, her stepfather, a stepsister and brother. She tries to keep everyone happy, but finds it very hard. When her stepfather Mack loses his job, they have all their possessions taken away from them. They find out that the only place to go is a bed and breakfast hotel called The Royal; it's far from it! While staying there, she has to endure bad living quarters and a life-taking fire.

A Book Report On Jenny Nimmo's BLUE BOA

This book is the 3rd book in the Children of the Red King series so we already know the characters of the endowed children, the evil, plotting Yewbeams and the worst of the worst the Bloors. But as you haven't read the book I will be happy to explain.

The endowed children are descendents of the Red King. Manfred Bloor is a hypnotiser. Asa Pike is a were-beast. Billy Raven can communicate with animals. Zelda Dobinski is telekinetic. Lysander Sage can call up his spirit ancestors. Tancred Torsson is a storm bringer. Gabriel Silk can feel memories through clothes. Emma Tolly can fly, and of course Charlie Bone can travel into photographs and paintings.

This particular book is about a boy (Ollie Sparks) who is made invisible, then locked in the school attic and never seen again.... until Charlie comes along that is. Charlie and his group of friends hear about Ollie and decide to do something about it .... well Charlie does, and he drags his friends, family and a welsh sorcerer along for the ride.

They embark on a journey through good and bad, dark and light full of secrets and magic until Bloors' Academy is turned upside down and inside out....Literally!

Bassingham Primary's Tsunami Appeal Day

Did you go to Bassingham Primary School on the Friday 21st January 2005? If you did you would have seen the superb efforts Bassingham made. On the afternoon of Friday the 21st, Bassingham Primary invited parents, grandparents and friends for an afternoon of fun and games. All the money raised would be sent to help the Asian Tsunami.

Bassingham put together a jam-packed afternoon. They had teas, a cake stall, book and video stalls, toy stalls and poem reading. Also donated were some fabulous raffle prizes - one of them, a holiday for four people in Spain. The whole school made an amazing effort and were greatly rewarded with a total sum of £1,233.45. Bassingham Primary School has rightly earned itself a name for charity fund raising.

MY FIRST DAY AT BASSINGHAM!

When I first started at Bassingham Primary School, I was very nervous about what the kids would be like, but I was really looking forward to swimming lessons - so I was also very excited! The first friend I made was a girl called Jessica - she was very nice. When we got into class, we did the register and then we lined up for swimming. I was getting excited. Finally we got to the swimming centre. I was put in the second group because I 'm not really good at swimming. When we got back from swimming, we had break. I played with Jessica and Ashleigh. When it was lunch, I went to Drama Club. The whole day was really good.

I think Bassingham Primary School is the best school ever!

School Council Update

The P.T.A have been very generous and have given the School Council a grand sum of £200 to go towards anything that we would like. Earlier this year the School Council held a competition to choose two designs which will be painted onto the outside of the mobile classrooms. All the designs were great and the Council have now decided on two particular ones. One is a space theme and the other is a beach theme. They have decided to use the money to paint the mobile classrooms, so they look brighter and fresher. [March 2005]

Well done to the two winners!

AND A HUGE THANK-YOU TO THE P.T.A!

'Scool' Dinners By Rachel

To eat, or not to eat? In some schools, school dinners are just a normal way of life, but most primary schools in Lincolnshire don't have the staff or money to provide them. The government has promised more money to go towards providing school dinners in primary schools, but will they have a warm welcome?

We carried out a survey in class 7 (Year 6) to see what they thought. Everyone agreed that if there was a choice of school dinners or packed lunches they would prefer a hot cooked meal.

We also thought that if school dinners were introduced then it would be ideal if we could have menus in advance so that children could have real choice and decide beforehand what they wanted to eat.

These are some of the suggestions for healthy meals put forward by the Y6 children.

· different types of pasta

· roast dinners occasionally

· a vegetarian option

· salad

· baked potatoes with fillings

We think healthier meals are a great idea. And now there's just one thing left to say, "GO FOR IT, JAMIE OLIVER!"

Mole War

On our school playing field we have an army of moles that are causing us a big problem. The children are having more and more trouble trying to run on the field, which is so uneven now. If anyone has any brilliant ideas of how to get rid of moles (and molehills as well), that will be great. We have had a few suggestions like putting dog mess down the holes they make, but we then thought this would not be a very good idea because of the children playing on the school field. Any ideas will be superb - they can be old, new or even crazy ones. We are getting fed up with these mad moles invading our field.

So moles if you're reading this STOP INVADING OUR FIELD!!!!

Please email your ideas to the enquiries address at the school.

Football Tournament

On Wednesday 13th April our school entered a football tournament at Navenby Primary School. We played against three other primary school teams - Caythorpe, Claypole and Navenby.

Ryan, Oscar, Callum, Maxine, Sophie, Emily, Jordan and Alistair were our brilliant team members. All the players played very well.

First we played Caythorpe and the game was drawn nil - nil. Next we played Navenby who won by two goals. From then on it went down hill and we then lost to Claypole as well.

Unfortunately we came last in the tournament and to make it worse, we didn't score one goal. Callum came closest when we were playing Claypole, with a shot that landed on the line but the opponent's goalie kicked it away.

Despite our lack of success we all enjoyed ourselves, showed good team spirit and were proud to represent Bassingham Primary School

Mad March hares jump in the sun.

Three Poems About Monsters!

A MONSTER POEM

Monsters, monsters up above,
They are definitely not full of love.
Monsters, monster hair they shed,
Monsters might be under your bed.
Monsters, monsters with the hose,
Monsters might be up your nose.
Monsters in the air,
Monsters, monsters could be in you hair.
Monsters, monsters in the light,
They could give you a great big FRIGHT.

A Monster Poem!

Monsters, monsters in the army,
You will find them playing with Barbies.
Monsters, monsters here or there,
They might be crawling in your hair!
They may be watching your TV,
Baby monsters sat on mummy monster's knee.
Monsters, monsters with big heads,
They could be sleeping under the bed.
One monster, two monsters, three monsters, four
Five monsters, six monsters, seven maybe more?

MONSTERS

Monsters, monsters all around,
They are living underground.
Monsters, monsters everywhere,
Prepare for a big scare!
Monsters, monsters with big jaws,
They will be waiting to roar.
Monsters, monsters howling and prowling all night,
When you wake up you will get a very big fright.
Monsters, monsters in your bed,
Run to your next-door neighbour Ted.

Running for School

On the 15th March the school took a large team of runners down to a cross-country tournament in the South of the county to compete against many other primary schools. This is a report of the event, as seen through the eyes of Alistair in Class 4.

"The cross country race was long and hard. At the start there was lots of pushing and shoving but that all stopped soon enough. The first part of the race was downhill but soon it began to go upwards. It was really hard work running up hill and I began to get really hot. As I edged nearer to the finishing line I burst into a sprint. As I took over several people I ran as fast as I could, managing to finish 33rd out of 350. Linton Taylor gave Bassingham its best result, finishing 2nd. Although it was a hard race, I really enjoyed myself and hope I can run again next year."

The Four Dragons

The earth had dried up and the people were suffering famine. When the Jade Emperor refused to send rain, the Four Dragons decide to take action.

"We must help them urgently, but how?" the Pearl Dragon asked.
"I know," said the Black Dragon. "We will somehow persuade the Jade Emperor to pour water over those withered lands."
"We've tried that already," said Yellow Dragon.
"Then we shall declare war on the Jade Emperor"
"Very well" the Pearl Dragon replied.

But when they finally arrived at the Heavenly Palace, the Jade Emperor had already assembled his army.
"Destroy them!" the Emperor cried.
The dragons knew they had to defend themselves. With an almighty roar, fire burst out of the Long Dragon's mouth, burning some of the Emperor's army to cinders. The Jade Emperor then realized that he could not win. As soon as the army had been crushed, a flame came out of Black Dragon's mouth. Although the Jade Emperor could not defend himself from the fire, the ground beneath him gave way sending him falling through the air from his palace in the clouds. Something very strange happened just then, the Jade Emperor turned into water. The water, which had been the Jade Emperor, fell into all the clouds and it began to rain. The dragons then dived into the Eastern Sea and lived happily ever after.

THE END.

Bassingham Primary School Drama Club Proudly Presents: Bugsy Malone

The school Drama Club are currently rehearsing a performance of Bugsy Malone. This popular musical is set in Chicago in the 1920s. The music and costumes will all be in a 1920s theme. In Chicago at that period of time, alcohol was banned - because of this, mobster gangs were trying to sell it without being caught by the police.

The main characters in the show are:

Bugsy: played by Jack Blousey

Brown: played by Olivia

Fat Sam: played by Sam

Tallulah: played by Zoe

Dandy Dan: played by Violet

Fizzy: played by Emily

And many other extras and dancers.

The performance dates are rapidly approaching, so Drama Club are practising a lot. The performances are on the Wednesday 13th and Thursday 14th July in our School Hall at 2pm.

On Thursday 7th July our school have been invited to perform at Lincoln University as part of a Children's Festival for Lincolnshire schools. Our plan is to perform during the day a selection of songs from Bugsy Malone. Parents will be invited along and tourists from the city will be invited to come and watch. Although the date hasn't been actually fixed yet, the 7th of July is the date we are working towards for our performance at Lincoln University.

Book Cover Competition

Recently our school have held a competition for the best book cover. Each class read a book; they then had to design a front cover for it. The teachers found it extremely hard to choose one winner from each class. Winners received a book suitable for their age group. We would like to thank all the participants in the competition.

Our Winners:

Maisy from Reception won the design for the book The Cat in the Hat.

Florence from Year 1 won the design for the book The Lazy Ladybird.

Taylor from Year 2 won the design for the book A Bugs Life.

Katie from Year 3 won the design for the book The B.F.G.

Katie C from Year 4 won the design for the book Mark Spark in the Dark.

Emily from Year 5 won the design for the book Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

Megan from Year 6 won the design for the book Demons in Disguise.

Brownies

If there's one good place to be on a Tuesday night, then my vote definitely goes to Brownies. Every Tuesday they do lots of different things, all of them really interesting. They do art, games, quizzes and lots more. People who go will find it very interesting, and even mums, if they become helpers, will find it good fun. But remember, girls and mums only, (sorry boys) and you'll find it at Bassingham Village hall, 6.00 - 7.30

Kwik Cricket Match

On Monday the 21st of May our Kwik (yes, it is spelt like that!!!) cricket team played a cricket match against Thorpe On The Hill. Unfortunately we lost, but only by 6 points, which is great for us, at it was the first game we'd ever played, and the sixth one for them.

The final score was 243 to us and 249 to the opposition. The best player was Violet, but the whole team did really well. The players for our team were Violet, Emily, Grace, Bethany, Ben. C, Ben. T, Ryan and Alex.

The only thing left to say is a huge well done to the team and I'm sure they'll play even better next time.

Cool Competition

The introduction below is a competition for writing the ending of the story. You will see the results on the next web page.

The Knock Wood Inn

I knew that something wasn't right from the start. I had a feeling as soon as we got there. The 'Knock Wood Inn' with its twisting bell towers and rambling ivy, just didn't seem right to me. I'd come to stay with an auntie for the summer. I can't call her much of an auntie though. I've never seen her and never will. She owns the Knock Wood Inn, …….well she used to. There was no one there when I arrived. There's plenty of life though, lots of it. Just none of it human…

Views on Secondary Schools

In a few months time Year 6 children from Bassingham Primary School will be off to secondary schools. I (Rachel) went out and found out some views of what the children are looking forward to and what they are not.

These are some of the views I heard:

Lorna, who is going to Robert Pattinson, has said that she is looking forward to better art and drama facilities and all the different and exciting trips they go on. She is not looking forward to homework (aren't we all!) and the horrible teachers!

Helen is going to Welbourn, and she can't wait to make new friends and, like Lorna, is looking forward to better facilities. Not in her good books are, horrible teachers, having a detention and getting lost!

Going to North Kesteven is Jemima, who is looking forward to vending machines (ok?!) and like Helen, meeting new people. She is not looking forward to GCSEs and History.

Grace is going to LSST (brainy!) and can't wait to try out all the different facilities and the swimming pool. She can wait for homework, English and the worst thing that can happen on your first day, is being lost!

Ryan is going to Carre's (Sleaford Grammar School) and he is looking forward to the sport, and not looking forward to English!

So as you can see most views are the same,….. we can't wait to get there, ………..but do we have to do homework?

“Now Is The Time To Say Goodbye

The Smile Team

I'm sorry to say that the time has come for all the year Y6 children to leave Bassingham Primary and move onto their secondary schools. Going with them are my two fellow team members Olivia and Rachel …… though I (India) will be staying on. We have decided to choose three new members. After lengthy interviews we have finally decided on Charlotte, Sophie and Alistair, (the first ever boy on the team!)

Thank you to all the people that volunteered for the job. Thank you to Mr Robertson for starting the team, but most of all thank you to Olivia and Rachel for helping us be the "Witham Staple Website Team!" By India (See you in September)

I am sorry to say that I (Olivia) am now leaving the team because I am going to NK secondary school. India will be carrying on working with three new friendly people. We interviewed a number of people to be the next three editors, they are……………….. Sophie, Ali and Charlotte. They will be introducing themselves in the next page.

I have really enjoyed contributing to the page.  I hope you liked it!

GOODBYEEEEE! From Olivia

Sad Goodbyes

The time has come for all Year 6s to leave the school. Unfortunately this means that me (Rachel) and Olivia will have to leave the 'Smile Team!' I've had a great time on the website and I hope the budding new members will have a great time too.

Myself, Olivia and India have gone through a gruelling process of choosing the next members of the Smile Team. It was hard work but we eventually decided on 3 new people. They are…Charlotte in Y5, Sophie in Y5 and Alistair in Y4.

Now all that's left to say is good luck to those 3 and goodbye from me!

Bye from Rachel

My interview with Conservative Councillor Raymond John Phillips

I (Olivia) have recently interviewed our council representative for Bassingham.

Q. What ideas will you be putting forward on improving education and behaviour in schools?

Councillor Phillips said: He would like to keep our local village schools because they are a lot of the time the main focal point of village. He would also like to involve the pupils' parents more.

Q. What is the issue you will be most concentrating on?

Councillor Phillips said: He will be concentrating most on reducing traffic and speed on the roads of Lincolnshire.

Q. Do you think bringing back hot school dinners into primary schools is a good idea and will you be taking this matter forward to the council meeting?

Councillor Phillips said: It was a good idea but he was worried that schools might not have enough money to do so.

Q. If you had not won the local election what would you be doing now?

Councillor Phillips said: He would be spending more time with his three children and he would have more time to socialise and relax.

Q. Have you been to a meeting yet? Did you get on well with the other councillors?

Councillor Phillips said: He gets on well with the other councillors however it is a serious business so he doesn't have much time to socialise. There are 77 other councillors with a large amount of people to serve and a budget of three quarters of a billion pounds.

Q. What issues were brought up?

Councillor Phillips said: Education in schools, social services and road transport.

Q. How does your council operate?

Councillor Phillips said: 77 people got voted in and they then get split into their parties. There are 2 or 3 independent councillors as well. It is quite similar to the government. Every councillor has one vote only.

Q. If you weren't a councillor what would you be?

Councillor Phillips said: He would like to travel more. However a councillor is not his full time job, as he is a surveyor, estate agent and he also has a family farm. Although most of the time is spent in his role as councillor.

Bassingham Family Fun Day

On Saturday 11th June Bassingham Primary held a Family Fun Day organised by their PTA. All money made will go towards the school. Thank you for all the donations given and if you came along thank you for all your help. The Fun Day was brilliant with lots of stalls, such as a tombola, a toy stall and a bookstall. The highlight of the afternoon must have been watching Mr. Robertson, our Headteacher, and other school staff getting wet sponges thrown at them in the stocks.

So thanks again to all who came along and helping us raise a total of around £1,800. Well done, Bassingham!

Languages In School

'Bon or Mal'?

An Article By Rachel.

In about 3 or 4 years time languages will become part of the curriculum for Primary Schools everywhere. Some children think it will be great but others don't. I went round and found out some views, these are some of them.

Ryan said he thought it was a good idea, and a good head start for secondary school. "If it had been introduced earlier I would have enjoyed it."

Ben said much the same, "….. and it means if you go to another country you could communicate easier. If we had it now it would be good."

On the Thursday the 7th July classes from our school went along to the Lincolnshire Children's Festival. We had a great time and everyone performed really well.

We had quite a good selection of performances as we had taken along, the choir, recorder clubs and some of the "Bugsy Malone" dancers. The only downside was that it hadn't been well advertised so there weren't many people there.

But we still gave it our best shot and we got a big cheer at the end. You'd be surprised at how much noise a few people can make!

The Knock Wood Inn

WELL DONE CHLOE!!!

I knew that something wasn't right from the start. I had a feeling as soon as we got there. The 'Knock Wood Inn' with its twisting bell towers and rambling ivy, just didn't seem right to me. I'd come to stay with an auntie for the Summer. I can't call her much of an auntie though, as I've never seen her and never will. She owns the Knock Wood Inn …..well she used to. There was no one there when I arrived and there still isn't now. There's plenty of life though, lots of it……just none of it human…

And here is the first episode of Chloe's "The Knock Wood Inn"

I slowly walked up to the building that stood in front of me. The top nearly touched the sky and it was as wide as 19 double-decker buses. Old rotten ivy was spread all over the walls. The place was a dump; it looked like it hadn't been cleaned for years. Cobwebs covered the corners of the rooms and the windows were old and rusty. I picked up my suitcase and carried on up the stairs. I reached out to take the door, when suddenly it turned into a face. It seemed to say, "Stay and DIE!!!"

What I Did In My Summer Holiday

Oh, nothing much…

Climbed Everest one afternoon,

Went round the world in my balloon.

For England scored a last kick winner,

Took Princess You-Know-Who to dinner

Out gunned Clint Eastwood in a western.

Reached the South Pole without a vest on.

Shot Niagara by canoe,

Cycled from here to Timbuctoo

Became a pop star topped the charts.

Transplanted half a dozen hearts.

Nothin' really super cool,

I'm thankful to be back at school.

Truck Safety

by Olivia

Articulated lorries cause a lot of accidents on the roads so "Exel" came to talk to us about truck safety. We found out a lot of things we didn't know. Here are a few things we found out. They demonstrated with a cone how badly you would get hurt if you cycled too close to a lorry.

They also showed how if you were stood in front or behind a lorry the driver would not be able to see you and would probably reverse back onto you or drive forward onto you.

We learnt that if your ball went under a lorry you should never go and retrieve it. A ball can always be replaced but you can't.

Be safe near lorries!

Thank you to Exel for coming in.

Around the World

Walking through the Amazon, seeing all the snakes,

Kayaking and sailing across huge lakes,

Skiing in the Alps, showing my style,

I haven't been to America for a while.

Seeing the Eiffel Tower, what a show!

Going to Antarctica, playing in the snow.

Walking the Wall of China, gee how long!!

I think I'll take a trip to Hong Kong.

Going scuba diving under the sea,

Yet I'm still full of life, yes that's me.

Travelling to Venice, what a sight!

Seeing the stars out at night

Now another has gone by,

I think its time to say goodbye!!!

And here is EPISODE TWO of Chloe's

"The Knock Wood Inn"
ILLUSIONS

It was an illusion, yeh…that was it. I was imagining things. I twisted the handle, the door creaked open and I walked in. Beside me was a tall mirror with writing engraved around the edge. I took a tissue from my bag and I cleaned the face glass. I looked at myself. Copper hair, up in a ponytail, two clips holding my fringe back. Blue eyes and pale skin. That was me. Carrie Parker.
All of a sudden, my reflection disappeared from view. I saw nothing. No Carrie Parker.
Then I heard it again. "Stay and DIE!"

The German Re-enactor

As part of our class topic on the second World War, a re-enactor came to our school in September and talked to some of the Year 6 children. We really enjoyed having him and he showed us lots of interesting things. He showed us a gas canister and a proper rifle from World War 2. Some of us tried out the gun (but don't worry the gun had been deactivated). He showed us how they used to cook their food. Then we each got a hockey stick and pretended it was a gun, and we did some marching. We had a great day and would like him to come again.

World War 2

As Year 5 we've been doing a topic on World War 2. As part of our topic we had to write a piece on how it would have felt to be in the world war. Here are a few examples:

"I think that children's lives must have been really horrible, being shipped off to the country by the army and being sent to people who might not even want you. Rationing as well, that must have been really hard, only being allowed to have some things is very different to our lives." By Ben

"I think life must have been hard during the world war. I wouldn't have liked to be a soldier, because lots of people got killed. Being an evacuee would have been strange, living with people you didn't even know. Staying in London or other places that were being bombed must have been tough. Once your food had gone, you wouldn't be able to have any more." By Nicola

The Ashes - 2005

The Ashes is a cricket tournament in which England and Australia fight it out in a series of 5 games. Australia had retained the Ashes for a very long time and England now have a very strong team for this year's series.

The 1st test was at Lords, which ended up all going Australia's way so the series was 1-0. The second test at Edgbaston was a high scoring one with England scoring over 400 in their first innings. That test went down to the very last day where Australia needed 107 runs with 2 wickets left. When the Aussies needed 2 runs to win, Harmison bowled a bouncer to dismiss Michael Kasprowicz.

Old Trafford was all going England's way until Brett Lee came in to save the test for Australia. With the series at 1-1 England needed a win at Trent Bridge.

At Trent Bridge, when Australia had followed on, England needed only 129 runs to win. The two openers got out quickly and Shane Warne's economy was 0.00!!! It ended up with Matthew Hoggard and Ashley Giles scoring the winning runs.  I was lucky enough to be there on the final day at Trent Bridge and will always remember the tension and excitement of one of the most dramatic games in cricket history. The Brit Oval brought even more glory to England and the Ashes were theirs!!! After a fantastic series we will miss the cricket.

BASSINGHAM AND BEYOND...

...HOLIDAY HAPPENINGS

SICILY

SICILY IS THE ISLAND THAT LOOKS AS THOUGH IT HAS BEEN KICKED INTO THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA. MAY IS A GOOD TIME OF YEAR TO VISIT AS IT IS NOT TOO HOT OR HUMID.

SCHOOL CHILDREN IN SICILY ARE VERY LUCKY - INSTEAD OF THE USUAL 6 WEEKS HOLIDAY THAT WE GET, THEY GET 3 MONTHS BECAUSE APPARENTLY IT IS TOO HOT FOR SCHOOL.

THE FOOD IS EXCELLENT. PIZZA AND PASTA ARE THE SICILIANS' SPECIALITY. SICILIANS EAT AN AWFUL LOT OF PASTA AND HARDLY ANY MEAT AT ALL. FAMILIES ARE VERY IMPORTANT AND THEY ALWAYS LIVE CLOSE TOGETHER.

MOON WHALES

They plough through the moon stuff

Just under the surface

Lifting the moon's skin Like a muscle

But so slowly it seems like a

lasting mountain

Sometimes they plunge deep

Under the moon's plains

Making their magnetic way

Through the moon's interior metals

Sending the astronaut's instruments scatty

Their music is immense

Each note hundreds of years old

Each whole tune a moon-age

So they sing to each other unending songs

As unmoving they move their immovable masses.

Their eyes closed ecstatic.

My Film Review "A Series Of Unfortunate Events"

I (Charlotte) am going to review a great film called "A Series Of Unfortunate Events". It is about three children called Violet, Klaus and Sunny. Violet could make basically anything out of anything!! Klaus reads loads of books and Sunny' s hobby is to bite things.

Jim Carrey is the only really famous actor in the film. I think it was a brilliant film and I would recommend it for 8 years+. Jim Carrey is excellent as Count Olaf and he is really good at all the different voices and he makes the film even better!!!

I would give "A Series of Unfortunate Events" a huge 8/10!!!

District Sports!!

On Friday the 17th of June we took a group of children to Caythorpe Primary School for the district sports. We took part in all the races there and did well in most. We were racing against children our own age. Once you had finished your race you got a card. There was a different coloured card depending on where you finished in the race. The stars of the afternoon were James, Emma and Ben who all came first. Bassingham Primary School worked together and every point counted to make them win. A great achievement, and the first win for the school in many years

December 2005

Crazy Christmas Families
Dad threw a pudding
At our TV screen
Two minutes before
The speech of our queen
When suddenly before us
In a wink of an eye
Her picture popped up
To throw back a mince pie
And then another
With two more for luck
Mum tried to run
Dad tried to duck
But it was already too late
She'd got us in sight
For all royal queens
Love a good fight
One pie exploded
And hit my brother
Another hit mum
 As she ran for cover
But the biggest of all
Bounced off a chair
Before smashing to bits
All over dad's hair
So let this be a lesson
From her majesty the queen
Don't ever throw puddings
 At your TV screen

Wallace and Gromit - Curse or the Were-Rabbit
Film Review

Wallace and Gromit are back with a whole new movie!

Wallace and Gromit appear as ANTI- PESTO.

Everyone in the town are growing vegetables for the annual vegetable competition.
The prize is the "golden carrot!" Its ANTI-PESTO's job to protect the town's overgrown vegetables from the dreaded rabbits.

Using loads of gadgets and gizmos Wallace and Gromit capture the rabbits and keep them in their basement. There's only one problem though ……..! They can't keep on capturing rabbits and keeping them in their basement. There's just not enough room.
Then Wallace has an idea, by putting all the rabbits in a huge tub and connecting the tub to one of Wallace's inventions they could make the rabbits think vegetables were bad. But things go wrong and the Were-Rabbit is born.

I think Wallace and Gromit in the Curse of the Were Rabbit is a brilliant film and would like to see a sequel made because it would follow on the stories of Lady Tottington, Wallace and Gromit and it would be good to find out what happens next in the adventures of Wallace and Gromit. I would give Wallace and Gromit a huge 7/10!!!! I would highly recommend it to anyone!!

The Midnight Murder
The blood and gore
Dripped down like rain,
With no leg there,
He was in terrible pain.
He limped along
The cobbled street,
There was no one there
For him to meet.
The leaves rustled
In the park,
The last light went out,
All was dark.
The cackle of a witch,
The groan of a man,
The little kid saw him,
Turned and ran.
The death came on
Halloween night,
The full moon gave
The only light.
He cried out
A screechy sound,
In a grave
He could be found.

The woodpecker looked amazed for a few seconds then said "Boy I don't know my own strength!"

MY MAGIC BOX
I will put in my box
A silver sparkle from a shimmering snowflake,
A warm glow from a burning fire,
And a swirling hurricane from a storming planet.
I will put in my box
The sound of a thundering wave bashing against the rocks,
The roaring laughter after a hilarious joke,
And the wonderful colours from an arching rainbow.
I will put in my box
A sonorous applause from a grateful audience,
Some entertaining friendship playing together,
And a safe, loving family sitting cosily on a soft, doughy sofa.
I will put in my box
A year with thirteen months,
A cloud with suns floating by,
And a mole up a tree and a bird in the ground.
My box is fashioned from ruby and diamond and bronze,
With a twinkling crystal lid and a lock of solid gold,
Its hinges are the tips of octopus tentacles.
I shall dive in my box
In the calm seas of the warm Mediterranean,
And swim with the tropical fish
Darting amongst the rocks.

My Magic Box

I will put in my box

A beautiful, breath-taking sunrise starting a new day magically,
A soft, floaty canter moving gently onwards to a far horizon,
Fickle and fresh feelings spreading rapidly to a young mind.

I will put in my box

The magical music of a merciful musician
A loving caring family laughing happily together,
A charming black stallion standing proud in a fresh spring field.

I will put in my box

Damp December dew sitting gently on deep grass,
Joyful, happy memories sticking firmly to a free mind,
The beautiful, daring poetry of an inspiring poet.

I will put in my box

A waveless sea and a dark day,
An a egg laying cow
And a milk making chicken

My box is fashioned from clouds, butterfly wings and autumn leaves,
With fresh sea shells on the lid and early childhood in the corners,
Its hinges are the rocks
Of moons

I shall skate in my box,
On the deeply snow-covered ice of the icebound North Pole,
Then rest quietly on an isolated iceberg,
The shade of a cloud.

My Magic Box

I will put in my box

The click of counting fingers beating a sharp, loud rhythm,
The pitiful, reasoning miow of a small, expecting cat,
The flowing, ticking of the time, first a second, then a minute.

I will put in my box

A flicker of light moving the working of day and the quiet of night,
A dream soft and fluffy, a vital piece of our mind,
The spinning of a top ending once, its time has run out.

I will put in my box

The breath of a sigh saying happiness and content
The coldness of ice like a stopped piece of our world
The drumming of a beat saying 1,2,1,2

I will put in my box

An earth-bound bird and a flying tiger
Toboggan round the rings of Saturn
Take a bath in the craters of the moon

My box is fashioned from lightning, thunder and rain
Its lid made from unbreakable glass
The hinges are snowflakes found on polar bears' coats
And the key to the lock is ambition

I shall roam in my box
Exploring the pure, colourless open spaces of a colossal peppermint cave
Then I shall sit
Bathing in the stillness of the air

My Magic Box

I shall put in my box

Happy, cherished memories from birth until now
The joyful, lifted voice of a happy child
The useful, needed company of a good friend

I shall put in my box

The happy, lively, people playing spiritedly in the playground
My loving, caring family who are supportive all the time
A freezing cold ice cream on a boiling summers day

I shall put in my box

The calmness of a flowing river
Coloured crystals shooting rainbows at the sun
The peacefulness of a summer night

I shall put in my box

A biting sun and a blistering moon
A snowman in the desert and
A camel in the North Pole

My box is fashioned from rubies and emeralds
With snow on the lid and life in the corners
Its hinges have been forged from thunder

I shall explore in my box
Upon the vast wonders of the Amazon
Then I shall camp out in the wilderness
Right under the stars

Eragon

THIS IS THE START OF MY FAVOURITE BOOK "ERAGON"
ind howled through the night, carrying a scent that would change the world. A tall Shade lifted his head and sniffed the air. He looked human except for his crimson hair and maroon eyes. He blinked in surprise. The message had been correct: they were here. Or was it a trap? He weighed the odds, then said icily, "Spread out; hide behind trees and bushes.

Stop whoever is coming… or die." Around him shuffled twelve Urgals with short swords and round iron shields painted with black symbols. They resembled men with bowed legs and thick, brutish arms made for crushing. A pair of twisted horns grew above their small ears. The monsters hurried into the brush, grunting as they hid. Soon the rustling quietened and the forest was silent again

The Shade peered around a thick tree and looked up the trail. It was too dark for any human to see, but for him the faint moonlight was like sunshine streaming through the trees; every detail was clear and sharp to his searching gaze. He remained unnaturally quiet, a long pale sword in his hand. A wire-thin scratch curved down the blade. The weapon was thin enough to slip between a pair of ribs, yet stout enough to hack through the hardest armour. The Urgals could not see as well as the Shade; they groped like blind beggars, fumbling with their weapons. An owl screeched, cutting through the silence. No one relaxed until the bird flew past. Then the monsters shivered in the cold night; one snapped a twig with his heavy boot …………………..

I would recommend that everyone reads this brilliant book!

You might one day spot

Place of My Dreams.

A frozen lake, crystal clear and ice cold. The white tops of the mountains stand out so bold. The beautiful white scene so delightful to see, A place to relax, a great place to be.

A cold chill blows gently in my face, This is a remarkable place.

The mountains and lake would catch your eye, A place of peace so pretty I could cry.

The attractive mountains the flowing streams, This would be the place of my dreams!

Chinese New Year

After we have had our New Year the Chinese people have their New Year. They believe it is a time to have a fresh start. The Chinese people have superstitions. These are some of the things they believe in :

#  They believe you are not allowed to clean on New Year's Day.

#  They believe you are not allowed to use knives and scissors on New Year's Day.

# Also you have to open all the windows to let any bad spirits out.

An animal represents every year. A dog represents this year. The school celebrated Chinese New Year, with a huge Chinese feast in the hall, which all the children enjoyed.

Cross Country Running!

Children from key stage 2 have been training for the cross-country running competition. The race is a 2km race and is on a Tuesday14th March. The children have been running round the playing field where the park is to help them get prepared for the long race itself.

Mrs White is running the club and will be choosing the teams. There are 4 teams, 2 teams are for the A race and 2 teams are for the B race.

We are hoping we will do well again this year because last year Linton, a brilliant runner who is now in Class 6, came a "whopping" 2nd in his race. Good luck to all the runners this year!

St. Valentine's Day

As you might remember St Valentine's Day was on the 14th of February. It is a time to send cards to people you love. People often put a question mark at the bottom of the card.

The school celebrated St. Valentine's Day by having a school disco on the 17th of February. It started at 5.30pm to 7.00 for Reception and Years 1 and 2, and at 7.30 till 9.00 for years 3,4,5, and 6. It was a brilliant disco and as usual lots of sweets, crisps and hot dogs were eaten.

Sabriel Book Review!!!

Sabriel is a really entertaining book, which I really enjoyed when I read it!  It’s about a teenager called Sabriel who is the daughter of the mage Abhorsen. For a long time she has lived outside the great wall of the old kingdom and far away from the uncontrolled power of free magic. But suddenly her life is ripped apart by the horrible dead that just won’t stay dead. Surprisingly enough it’s her father’s job to stop these terrifying creatures and then destroy them!! But when a particularly large dead creature carries off her beloved father, it is up to her to inherit her father’s place as Abhorsen and stop the monstrous dead. She also takes it upon herself to destroy Kerrigor, evil lord of the undying dead. Fortunately she finds help from an annoying cat called Mogget and a handsome soldier called Touchstone who she eventually falls in love with!

It’s a great book and I think a lot of people will definitely enjoy it!!!!

Cross-Country

Cross-country is an action packed extravaganza of a running contest! Hundreds of children, from many Lincolnshire schools entered a recent competition held at Grimsthorpe, all hoping they had a chance of winning the colossal race. There were 30 pupils in Bassingham’s team - 20 boys and 10 girls. There were various races for different age groups.

I myself entered the boys ‘A’ race and came 5th out of 300 people!!

England’s Tour Of India

The England cricket team have headed out to India to play some test, and one-day matches. The English team have managed to get on top of the Indians after being bowled out for 393 in their 1st innings. Paul Collingwood scored an unbeaten century and received excellent back-up from Matthew Hoggard, Steve Harmison and Monty Panesar (a reserve spinner)

I think that Andrew Flintoff shouldn’t be captain because he needs to concentrate on his own bowling and batting. He needs to play a major part in the team, as many of their big performers have come back to England.

An Ice-Cream…

The most scrumptious Belgian chocolate melted temptingly into a creamy base.  Its mouth-watering colours are vivid among a variety of different toppings.

Tiny specks of the most delicious freshly whipped double cream are squirted daintily around. Shiny silver beads are dotted carefully, while thick layers of creamy, chocolate sauce are splattered merrily everywhere. The rich Belgian chocolate ice cream is balanced beautifully in a patterned bowl. The glass bowl itself has a carved ice- cream cone; it looks as if it has been made by a skilled craftsman. The delicate ice cream is finished by simply placing a ruby red cherry on top.

The Canadian Seal Hunt

Sealing is an off-season activity conducted by fishermen from Canada’s east coast. Over the past three years more than a million seals have been killed, mainly for their fur and for their oil. The seals are killed in brutal ways, many with large, wooden clubs and guns. Dealers can deduct $2+ for every bullet hole they find, so the hunters, shooting from moving boats, often shoot the animal once and unable to reach it, leave it to die. Many of the seals sink to the seabed and are never recovered. There are of course, limits to how many seals a fisherman can kill though there are no penalty if that quota is exceeded. At times, the Canadian Government and sealing industry have tried to claim that the species is over populated. Nothing could be further from the truth. Harp seal numbers are plummeting. In the 1950’s and 1960’s more than two thirds of the entire population was wiped out. This is because the pups never have a chance to mature and carry on breeding. 95% of the seals killed over the last 5 years have been pups between 12 days and 12 weeks of age.

This massacre has to stop or we will soon lose a beautiful species.

England's World Cup Worries

Owen's World Cup is over due to a nasty fall involving his knee ligament. Wayne Rooney is yet to play a full game and Rio Ferdinand and Gary Neville are also two big worries.

It's not looking good for England!

It's not long now until the World Cup final and everyone is very tense and on edge. Sven Goran-Eriksson made a surprise choice in his squad for the World Cup, when he selected Theo Walcott who is just 17 years old. The speedy striker made his debut for England in a warm up game against Belarus, which sadly England lost 2-1. The main contenders to win the cup are Brazil, Argentina, France, Germany, Holland and England. To win the World Cup you have to get past the group stages and then win 4 consecutive matches.

Lambing
We have recently finished lambing!

When they are first born, lambs are brought in from the field in the quad bike trailer. They are then put in a smaller pen with their mothers for a few days. This gives the ewes a chance to get used to having it's lamb.

They are then put in a larger pen with a few other ewes and lambs. By this time, the lambs are ringed (have a ring on their tail) and numbered. This way it is easier to identify the ewes and lambs once they are out in field.

The lambs are dependent on their mothers for about 12 weeks; afterwards they will begin to eat grass. The ewes eat plenty of grass therefore they produce lots of milk for the lamb(s).

In For One, Out For Another

Wayne Rooney has majestically recovered in time for the knockout stages after starting one of the three group games. However in England's final group match against Sweden, Michael Owen was ruled out of the World Cup due to a serious knee injury involving his ligament, when he fell awkwardly. The injury may mean he will miss the start of the next Premier league season. Wayne Rooney has been very lucky to recover in time, as he is a player to watch in the future, and it is a massive opportunity for him to play in this major football tournament.

SPANISH BULL FIGHTING

A Tradition of Cruelty

On a trip to Spain earlier this year I was brutally enlightened as to just how alive the tradition of bull fighting still is. How such cruelty can be advertised so frequently and shown is such relaxed environments, (I saw it in various cafes during my stay), appears to me totally barbaric. Bulls are suffering torment and painful, drawn-out deaths for the sake of entertainment.

To me a bull is just as innocent and vulnerable to cruelty as any seal or rhino could be. It seems that just because they are considered livestock, used as a source of food and there is no shortage in their numbers they are considered not to be as important as the more exotic animals. This baffles me. As this animal is not even remotely under threat of dying out, does it mean that they are not able to feel pain? Because we can eat them does it make letting them suffer this way all right? To me the answer is, and will always be no.

Other cruel practices in other countries, such as dog fighting have been made illegal, though there is no real evidence that they have been fully stopped. Sad though it is at the moment there appears to be no likelihood of bullfights being stopped. To the Spanish it is seen as a national sport and a traditional part of their culture. To them, matadors are seen as icons in the same way we see our sporting celebrities.

One has to wonder how people can enjoy watching such a cruel spectacle.

ASK RESTAURANT

BRAYFORD WHARF

WHERE CAN WE AS CHILDREN EAT AFTER WE'VE MOVED AWAY FROM THE CHICKEN NUGGET DOMINATED CHILDREN'S MEAL? I'D SAY "ASK" IS A PRETTY SAFE BET, JUST AS LONG AS YOU LIKE ITALIAN FOOD.

THE FIRST IMPRESSION: MODERN INTERIOR AND QUITE A SOPHISTICATED AMBIENCE. GOOD SEATING ARRANGEMENTS WITH LOVELY VIEWS ONTO THE WHARF.

THE MENU: VERY LARGE CHOICE OF FOOD, MAINLY PASTA DISHES, THOUGH THERE IS A CHOICE OF PIZZA SALADS ARE ALSO AVAILABLE. !!!NO CHILDREN'S MENU!!! ALL FOOD IS FRESHLY COOKED THERE AND THEN, DUE TO THE OPEN PLAN KITCHEN YOU CAN SEE AND SMELL THE FOOD BEING PREPARED.

THE DESSERT: DON'T EXPECT THE SAME AMOUNT OF CHOICE FOR THE PUDDING GUYS; THEIR PUD PORTFOLIO IS DEFINITELY SPARSE. YOU HAVE A CHOICE OF ABOUT 6 ITEMS, 1 OF WHICH IS JUST ICECREAM. IF YOU LIKE A HOT DESSERT, I WOULD RECOMMEND THE TARTE' TATIN.

THE SCORE: I ENJOYED THE FOOD BUT I WOULDN'T RECOMMEND THE RESTAURANT TO YOUNGER CHILDREN DUE PURELY TO THE TYPE OF FOOD THE RESTAURANT SERVES.

4/5 - VERY GOOD

JUST A PARAGRAPH THAT I THOUGHT YOU MIGHT LIKE

You've probably never heard of an Iotie. We're just like you really. Only we're a little bit smaller. We have houses and clothes, money and markets. So really we're not that different. You don't see much of us. We spend most of our time in coat pockets and shoes. Not the new or still used ones though. The ones in old abandoned houses and wardrobes. Some people like us, some people don't. We're so small that sometimes we get mistaken for large insects and then you have to hide quickly before you get squashed by a fastly approaching Little Woman. You have to decide whether someone is your friend or your enemy. This is about the time when I couldn't decide.

The Sun Stopped Shining
The sun stopped shining, and the cold was here to stay,
The sun stopped shining; autumn's on its way,
The sun stopped shining, so we couldn't play,
The sun stopped shining, and the shorter was the day!

JAMIE'S DINNERS GIVEN THE THUMBS DOWN!!!

In Rotherham, Rawmarsh Secondary School, Jamie Oliver has failed to convince some mothers that fruit and veg is right. The mothers have started their own junk food take-away. They have been going to the local chip shop in school breaks and purchasing the junk food. This is happening just a short time after Jamie had made the meals much healthier. The mums deliver 50 to 60 meals a day, taking children's orders through the school gates. They claim that this way meals are a lot cheaper. According to them children have to pay up to £ 3.75 for a small piece of pizza, a milkshake and a portion of fruit. Although Jamie cannot do anything as he is currently on holiday in Australia, he has been told of the happenings.
My conclusion is that yes, chips are cheaper but do the mums quite realise how much harm they are causing a number of pupils?

COUSIN AUTUMN

Summer packed her bags today,
To take her annual holiday.
She jetted of beyond our reach,
To seek the perfect golden beach.
She left a cousin in her place,
A cheek chap with ruddy face.
We saw him bring a paint box too,
But didn't know what he could do.
You see, this strange, eccentric fellow,
Is daubing trees in red and yellow!!!

HOSEPIPE BAN

People have been using too much water.  Most of the water we are using is from hosepipes. We have been using the hosepipe for silly reasons like watering the flowers, washing cars and lots more things. This means that we won't have any washing or even drinking water. Instead, you could have a water butt. Please try to cut down the amount of water you use.

INTERVIEW - SOUTH AFRICA 2006
By Holly Mammatt

In the summer holidays I went to South Africa with my family. First we stayed in Johannesburg with my Auntie for the weekend. We went to an interesting museum about where the first humans on Earth were found.

On Monday we started touring down to Cape Town. We stopped at Gariep Dam where we spent the night - it was a beautiful place in the mountains and we saw a meerkat in the nature reserve.

More next month……………….

Boy Bands

We hit corridors to find out which boy band was the most popular. The website team came up with 5 boy bands, and then I asked the children which was their favourite. Below are the results:

Kaiser Chiefs 23
Mcfly 12
Razorlight 8
Westlife 7
Journey South 1

So the winner was:
Kaiser Chiefs!
And the loser was:
Journey South!

The Halloween Story of Salem

The following happened between the years 1691 and 1692. There was a village known as Salem where two girls lived called Betty and Abigail. They often played with the house slave whose name was Tituba. She taught them things that were strictly forbidden. The girls started having fits, screaming, acting like birds and cats. After much puzzling the doctor was sure it was witchcraft. The villagers pestered Betty and Abigail wanting to know the names of the other witches. They came forward with three names Tituba, Sarah Good and Sarah Osburne. When questioned Tituba claimed there were other witches in Salem. Unimaginable people were accused including a little girl as young as four-years-old. June the 10th marked the first day that a witch was hanged at Gallows Hill. Eventually a man said 'It is better that ten guilty witches should escape than that one innocent person should die". That was the end of witch killing in Salem! Later studies showed that the hysteria exhibited by these women was due to eating wheat and barley contaminated with mould.

Back to school

Goodbye mum, its time for school
"Please don't kiss me, you know it's not cool"
In the playground, lots of chatter
Even the teachers like to natter

Brand new uniform, scrubbed up faces
Polished shoes, with tied up laces
Whistle goes, stand in line
Into the classroom, two at a time

Coats on pegs, sandwiches away
Everyone's ready to start the day
Maths is first, then it's art
Next P.E, it's good for the heart

The clock strikes twelve, its time for lunch
New bags open, crunch, crunch, crunch

Time for English in the hall
No-one studies, not at all
Home we go, but I'd like to stay
"Come on" says mum, "It's the end of the day"

Playpark Car Boot Sale

As most people are aware, five members of the village have come together to improve the children's playpark. On Saturday 16th September, there was a car boot sale on the playing field and it was huge success. It raised £242! Approximately 35 cars turned up. But the grown ups couldn't have done it without us (children) because we were running to and fro taking orders for teas and bacon rolls (yum!!)

Review On The Little Shop Of Horrors!
Saturday 23rd of September

I went to see The Little Shop of Horrors. In the first part of the play there were six ugly
ladies singing a high-pitched song.
After their song a man called Mr Mushnik came on, he was shouting at a poor boy, his name was Seymour. He was wearing a red baseball hat and was very clumsy.

After the crashing and a banging Mr Mushnik
started speaking to another of his helpers - her name was Audrey. Audrey was a tall girl with short blond hair and was very intelligent. When they had gone Seymour started singing an orphan song of his past life.

He moved to the shop and slept under the old rusty desk. He found a seed and secretly grew it in the cellar. Later Seymour decided to tell Audrey and Mr Mushnik all about his plant which could talk and was starting to ask for food. He called it 'Audrey 2' but nobody was interested. At last he decided to put it in the window to see if any of the customers liked it. Later Mr Mushnik saw it and started to shout "What are you doing? "he screamed. But the customers liked it and it got bigger and bigger.

The play was really weird at the end because the plant ate Mr Mushnik and Audrey. Soon Seymour decided he should kill the plant and he became the shop owner.
