Headteacher Mr Ian Howells
@ @ @
Academically, we are one of the top 15 schools in the county, with outstanding results in Key Stage One and Two.
Last update December 2011:
Headteacher Mr Ian Howells
The building work has now finished so we had a big tidy up on Saturday with lots of help from parents. Fences, benches and even the mobile were given a lick of paint. The last boxes from the move were unpacked, the Reception outside area was sorted and Mrs Blow created some lovely displays. The children were very excited when they returned to school on the Monday. Thanks to everybody who helped to tidy up the school.
The open morning that followed was very successful and the Headmaster received lots of praise for the new school.
The cooking club had a delicious start and the children enjoyed making smoothies in the first session.
The pupils and staff wish you a very Merry Christmas and peaceful New Year.

1,000 voices. The Sing-up club from years
five and six joined 1,000 children from all over Lincolnshire in a huge concert
in Grantham. The event was the culmination of many hours of lunchtime practice.
The children from Bassingham were part of the Robert Pattinson school cluster
which gave a wonderful rendition of “I can see clearly now the rain has gone.”
The faces of some of the children could be viewed on BBC‟s Look North. For those
of you who missed it, a clearer version can be seen on the website
www.soundlincs.org .
“It was very enjoyable and I got to meet lots of new people. It was a good
opportunity to perform in such a large group” Alexander, Class 6
Around the world in 35 days. Over the term, children from reception class have
been given the opportunity to sample food, cultures and traditions from around
the world. This has included hand-painting and food from Bangladesh, Flamenco
dancing and paella, English breakfasts, French picnics and making Italian pizzas
at
Pizza Express in Newark. On the last day of
term the children "flew" around the world in a spectacular modern aeroplane. On
landing they stopped at a variety of countries, where visitors to the school had
set up stalls filled with tastes and customs from across the globe.
“We made lots of flags, I liked the red and yellow one. I liked the hot food”
Billy, Reception Class
Pop-art. Local artist Sue Jackson came into
the school to talk to children from years three and six about the life and works
of Andy Warhol. The children then drew self-portraits in his pop-art style.
There were some exceptional results. Ten paintings from each class were selected
to have their work displayed at The 43rd Annual Art Exhibition, Memorial Hall,
Harmston on March 5th and 6th; Saturday 1 to 5 and Sunday 11 to 4. Admission
£1.25.
“I loved all the different colours, they were very bright. I felt very proud
when I had finished my painting” Sophie R, Class Three
Sporting success. Bassingham continued the cross country season with an outstanding win at the Grove in Newark. Team A have won all of the meetings so far and teams B and C have finished in the top ten. Throughout, the children have given some impressive performances in dire conditions. Many thanks to all the parents who come along to support the team.
Building update. The new block is beginning to really take shape and we
will be moving into it at Easter. Due to the exceptionally cold winter the
project is about a month behind schedule. However, we are expecting the whole
school to be completed by September. Complete after school child care facilities
will then be available in the new Bassingham Pre-School wing.

Dear Residents,
I am writing to acknowledge current traffic congestion difficulties on Lincoln
Road and to apologise for recent inconvenience, since I am aware that the school
has received a small number of complaints.
You may be aware that to park their cars,
teaching staff have for some time been using the grassed area by the school
reception entrance. However, this area is needed at present for access to the
construction site so teachers are currently using the main car park. In any
event, parking here was damaging the grass and making the area unsightly so will
not be permitted in future.
The effect of this has been to increase demand for parking places in the car
park. At peak times, I regret it is inevitable there will be an overspill of
demand onto Lincoln Road, as parents arrive to drop off or collect their
children. Our winter weather has further exacerbated the problem.
We have a travel plan in school which
encourages parents and pupils to walk or cycle to school whenever possible, but
in poor weather parents will use their cars. Also, many families live in
neighbouring villages so have little alternative but to get in the car. We have
written to parents more than once about the need to try to share transport, to
park safely and show consideration for local residents and other road users. But
overall, I have to accept that the situation is not ideal.
For the future, I can assure you that we
will do whatever we can to minimise congestion. In the meantime, if you
experience a particular problem, please do not hesitate to bring this to the
attention of Mr. Howells, our Headteacher.
Yours sincerely Mike Halloran

Childrens' Views
Our seven class system helps children develop lively and enquiring minds. This year we were given the Gold Artsmark award in recognition of the exceptional work we do in drama, art and music. Sport also plays a vital role within the school. Bassingham have been the district sports champions for the past five years. We are proud of our school and we think it's a remarkable place to be. But don't just take our word for it-
“I like the teachers and the lessons are fun. I love the displays in the classroom. Last year I enjoyed looking after the wildlife area. We planted bulbs in the spring.” Elizabeth, Class 5
“We play Duck-Duck-Goose in the playground. The older children help us. On sunny days we sit on the grass under the big trees.” Laura, Class 1
“District Sports is my favourite day. It's good to be part of a team. We all cheer and support each other and we get to miss lessons!” Abby, Class 6
“I absolutely love Chess Club. I managed to get to the Giga final. I was so excited.” Robert, Class 4.

We are a successful school serving rising 5 to 11 years olds. The school achieves its outstanding reputation thanks to the hard working team of dedicated staff, the superb attitude of the pupils and our supportive parents and governors.

Mr Howells
The new head teacher Mr Howells recently joined Bassingham Primary School and

PTA and School Events
The PTA at our school is really helpful.
They help the school to organise events and raise money. Some of them are
teachers and some are parents.
The chair of the PTA is Mrs J Baddon. You can contact her on 01522 789923 if you
want to join the PTA or would like more information about any of the events.
The aim of the PTA is to raise money to purchase extras for the children. This
year we are raising money for the activity trail that will be built around the
school playground.
Events, how much we raised
Here at Bassingham primary school we have
raised a lot of money from different events.
We have had events like: summer fair, disco, red nose day, Christmas fair,
From red nose day we raised £100 for charity.
From the Christmas fair we raised £830, from the discos we raise approximately
£100 and the Bingo raised about £200.
We don’t always raise money just for the school we also give to other charities
like Red Nose Day and at Christmas we always organise the Samaritans’ Children’s
shoe boxes and for Harvest Festival we support the homeless by giving donations
for tinned foods.

My Favorite Memory at Bassingham Primary School
“My Favourite Memory at Bassingham Primary School is when I finally, after a lot of hard work, finished my SATs! Hooray! I am very excited about secondary school but upset about leaving Bassingham!”
“I have had lots of brilliant moments at Bassingham, really good friends and kind helpful teachers. However the recent trip to PGL was one of the best events. My favourite memory is when I conquered my fear of heights of the giant swing because I was really scared. When I got on it we went higher and higher… then Oaki pulled the white string and we both screamed …we eventually slowed down and came back down to the ground…safe and proud of my achievement!”
“My first favourite memory was when I first came to school and I met all of my teachers. They were very friendly and helped me make lots of new friends. My new friends showed me around the school and the next day, I knew my way around the school off by heart. I really enjoyed Bassingham Primary School and I am very sad that I am leaving.” By Georgia Lilley
“Over the past 7 years I have had millions of wonderful memories at Bassingham Primary School. But the one which stands out the most was when my friends and I were in the cabin at PGL and we were packing for the last day. We had loads of stuff and it was really tricky so we all decided to pull everything out of the drawers and chuck it all on the floor. In the end we sat in the middle on soaking wet clothes and had our photo taken!” By Katie–May Coulson.

All the children have settled well into the new school year. It has been a busy introduction to school life for the children in reception. They have had visits from a Doctor, Nurse, Dentist, Beautician and Yoga instructor.
The children in KS2 are studying World War Two for this term's history topic. It
has certainly inspired them, several of the children have brought in memorabilia
from relatives. Many of the children have spoken to their grandparents about
their own wartime experiences.
All of KS2 went to Eden Camp in Yorkshire. The display in the old P.O.W. huts
gave the children an insight into life during the war.
“The prisoner of war hut was fascinating and horrific at the same time, the man
was so skinny” William. Class3
“The Church was nice and quiet, it gave you a chance to think about all the
people who had died in the war” Amy. Class 4
“My favourite hut was the U-Boat because it showed me
the war cost so many lives” George Class 5
“I liked the Blitz hut, it was exciting but it made
me realise how worried the people must have been” Edward Class 6
It was a thoroughly enjoyable day. All the children
behaved impeccably and were a credit to the school. Examples of the children‟s
work on WW2 will be on display in the foyer of the school and in the Heritage
Room. Hopefully there will be a „jam and spam‟ VE Day celebration later in the
term.
Some of the children from Classes 4 and 5 had their
paintings on display at the flower festival at St Michael‟s Church.
Congratulations to Elizabeth 1st, Bethany 2nd, Tyla 3rd.
The children celebrated harvest with an assembly in Church. Thank you to all parents for your generous donations which were given to The Lincolnshire Larder.

Silence
Silence is the colour of darkness, sad and
quiet,
Silence smells of air flowing around a room,
Silence sounds of nothing, dull and boring,
Silence tastes of plain water, old and smelly,
Silence looks like a statue, frozen and still,
Silence reminds me of death shivering down my spine.

Silence is the colour of airy white stormed with a splash of dull impolite grey.
Silence is the smell of misty wind dancing in the stormy sky.

it sounds like nothing.

My Favourite Person
My favourite person is my friend,
We’ll be taught together till the end,
We laugh and we cry,
And let sorrow pass by.
As we grow older
And the days get colder,
Our friendship grows closer,
And we’ll stay together forever and ever.
I look up at you as a friend to rely on.
To tell all my secrets and a shoulder to cry on.
You look after me when I am in tears,
Even when I have the biggest fears.
We’ll be together,
Not just forever,
But until
Our days are no more.
I know some day we will move on
And look for the future far beyond,
I know I’ll remember my special friend,
My favourite till the end.
