Bassingham Scout Group 1 Mile Fun Run - Cancelled
The Scout group wish to apologise to anyone who was hoping to take part in the planned fun run at this years Bassingham Show. Problems outside the groups control meant the event had to be cancelled at the last minute. The group are hopeful these problems can be resolved and are now planning to host the event at the Bassingham Show 2012. Please look out for details in the Witham Staple early in the New Year. Thank You Bassingham Scout Group Leaders

Waiting list policy for the 31st Lincoln
and 1st Bassingham Scout Group
We have a very successful Group in Bassingham which has a highly motivated and
committed team behind it. However, whilst we are delighted that the group is so
popular, it does, inevitably, cause disappointment when children have to wait to
join us and in a minority of cases, have a place declined where numbers
prohibit. Hence, we decided that it would be appropriate to draw up a formal
policy to ensure clarity for all parties in deciding how to allocate places to
those children waiting to join the Group in Bassingham.
In drawing up this policy, we are aware that children living in the village of Witham St Hughes may also wish to join the Group in Bassingham. Regrettably, with the number of helpers and ratios of children permitted, we are unable to cope with the large numbers from that catchment area and feel that, in the long term, its needs would be best served with the introduction of its own Group. In the meantime, we will endeavour to take children where there are spaces after the priorities noted below have been met. Any parent who is affected by this may be able to apply to the local group in Hykeham which may be able to find a place where we could not.
Further to this, contact the Lincoln and District Scout Movement's "Join-in Co-ordinator", Ken Blake; e mail ken.blake@ntlworld.com
Therefore with effect from 20th July 2010, as agreed at a full committee meeting
and following consultation at the Group‟s AGM on 28th June 2010, the policy for
new membership is as follows:-
In order of priority:-
1) The Scouting movement is a programme which starts with membership in the Beaver section at the age of 6, through to Cubs and to Scouts. Any child who commences this journey follows a structured progression and hence, has an entitlement to a place in each subsequent section of the movement.
2) A child who has a parent who is a leader, or is willing to undergo training to be a committed leader or helper
3) A child who lives in Bassingham and the surrounding villages of Carlton le Moorland, Aubourn, Thurlby, Haddington, Stapleford, Brant Broughton and Norton Disney.
4) A child who has a sibling in the Group.
5) A child who attends Bassingham School.
The Scout group has put this policy together to manage the increase in numbers. However rather than this put you off if your child is interested in joining the group it is recommended that you still get their name down at the earliest opportunity to be considered for a place in the group.
[WS Sep 2010]
A range of opportunities for volunteers in the community. Bassingham has a well established Scout Group which has flourished for many years. The Scout Group is made up of three sections. These are a Beaver Colony, a Cub Pack and a Scout Troop. There are three appointed leaders and a number of assistant leaders and parent helpers who work with the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. There is a very healthy waiting list of young people who would like to join the different sections of the Bassingham Scout Group and we are in urgent need of additional volunteers to join in and help with the various activities. If you live in the area and think that working with young people in this way could be something you would enjoy then why not come along to one of the sessions to have a look. For more details contact 789673 for Beavers, 788241 for Cubs and 789365 for Scouts.

Bassingham Cubs raise Money for the
Hub (the New Village Hall)
During the autumn term 2009 Bassingham Cubs were given a challenge to raise
money to buy a decorated brick for the new Village Hall. The Sixes worked very
hard and raised enough money to buy a brick for each Six.
Blue Six
My Six which is Blue offered to have wet sponges thrown at us to raise money for
a brick for a new building in Bassingham called the HUB. The price was for the
Cubs 50p and for parents was £1. We stood in a line behind a bench
and had VERY cold sponges thrown at us! We raised £30.00.
William Howells (Blue six)
Red Six
Our Six planned to make pompoms, we sold them to earn money for a
brick for the village hall. We made 43 pompoms and made £27.80. Robert
Braithwaite & Stefan Taylor (Sixers Red Six)
Green Six
Our Six ran a bingo game and spot the ball on the cub’s night. Bingo
cards were 50p and spot the ball was 20p. The prizes were two chocolate Santa’s
one box of chocolates and a tub of haribo. We raised a total of £28.00.
Elliot Doody (Sixer Green Six)
Yellow Six sponsored walk
My Six planned a walk from the village hall in Bassingham around Bassingham
village and back. About half way through one of the leaders set up a table for
refreshments, we had a choice of hot chocolate, orange squash and chocolate
sweets.
Some of the cub’s parents came on the walk as well.
The reason we did this walk was because Bassingham is having a new village hall
called the Hub, it is going to massive I’ve been told. The Hub committee are
selling bricks for the hall and you’re allowed to get your names engraved on the
brick. We raised £35 even though it is £25 per brick. So when the hall is built
it will have a brick with my Six’s name on it.
By James Coffey (Sixer Yellow Six)
White Six 30th Lincoln
Tea and coffee day yum yum
Our Six arranged to sell tea, coffee and biscuits at our first football match of the season (thankfully we won 15-0). We didn’t have a set price for the refreshments, we asked for a donation towards our village hall fund. We raised £25.00 which is the price of a single brick. George Richardson (Sixer White Six)
[WS March 2010]
The Hub committee along to the Cub's meeting to present them with their forms and money raised. During the presentation each six presented their money and explained what they had done to raise it. Chief cub Thomas Holm Johansen also showed and displayed his scale model of the new Hub which he had been working on.

Canoes
Bassingham
Scout Group is delighted to announce that we have received a grant from the
‘Awards for All’ Lottery Group to buy ten canoes and a trailer. We hope to
get them before the summer and intend to use them to develop the canoeing skills
of the cubs and scouts. However, we currently have nowhere to store this
equipment safely and are looking for secure, dry storage for the canoes.
To make full use of the canoes and develop the whole group’s activities, we need leaders and helpers for both cubs and scouts urgently — especially as the current Cub Leader, Julie Thomas, is leaving this summer. If you can help with any of these requests, please contact Alsion Kelly (Tel: 788241) or Tony Davis (789365). [WS May 2001]

Tuesday evenings from 6.45pm to 8.30pma
at St Michael's Church Bassingham
The youth group has resumed meeting, the young people are currently working on putting on a show sometime in the New Year, as well as representing young people in the area to have a voice in what is needed for young people and their communities in the district of North Kesteven. They have also been busy over the last few weeks putting together a team of junior football coaches and learning how to deliver a lesson to primary school children, thanks to the patient training of Bassingham’s experienced Junior Football Coach, Dave Budd. In addition, the young people set up and ran a profitable stall at our Village Bonfire Night, donating proceeds from the sale of sweets, pop and crisps to the fireworks display.
We are seeking a trained Youth Leader to come on board and take over the running of this established group and we can access funding to pay for two workers in the New Year. It has been suggested that one of the workers could come from Bassingham. There is a great deal of support from voluntary workers. Is there anyone out there willing to apply for these posts when advertised?

Bassingham Youth Club - Closed 2005
The youth club, which started in 1998 in response to demand from young people, has closed in 2005 due to lack of volunteer helpers and a qualified leader.
The club was paid for by Lincolnshire County Council, with some
occasional support from the Area Youth Manager. Young people aged 13 to 18, met on Tuesdays from 7.15 to 9.45 pm in the
Village Hall. Facilities included pool, table tennis, volleyball, music centre,
television, play-station and games. Interested helpers should contact Lyn Baker (Tel: 789031).

The Rise and Fall of Bassingham Youth Club
At a Parish Council meeting in March 1998 four villagers were persuaded to form a Management Committee to get a Youth Club off the ground. A grant of £1000 was approved and received in May 1998 from the Community Safety Initiatives Project Fund of the Lincolnshire Police Authority.
There was a lot of support in the village. The Village Hall and Playing Field Committee helped us get rooms and allowed us storage space. The Heritage Room was made available for committee meetings. To get us started we bought and borrowed various items of suitable equipment. Initially we had 40 registered members between the ages of 11 and 18.
We had help from the LCC Youth Service and four different Youth Leaders, including Becky Simm, who was a trained youth worker and has gone on to be director of Youth Lincs. Phil Hutchinson, who has experience from Glasgow and brought some excitement to the club as well as a bouncy castle. He started a successful junior section and organised trips ice skating, ten pin bowling, horse riding and a car driving experience, unfortunately he was posted away with the RAF, the club has struggled since.
Throughout there were volunteers helping out at various times keeping the club going without a leader. Notably Lyn Baker who managed the tuck shop and club funds and Pete Smith who entertained in various ways particularly his disco.
The club has had its difficulties at times; some members did not behave as well as they might. This caused conflict with other groups and the school. Unfortunately volunteers have moved on to other things; the Community Room was no longer available and the last leader resigned. The Youth Club has now been wound up and remaining funds transferred to the Bassingham Village hall and Playing Field Committee for safe keeping. If volunteers wish to start this up again, find a suitable venue and the funds are available to help in the process. I feel the young would welcome the club being reformed.

Young people
help to make village film
Over half-term,
seventeen young people, including members of Bassingham Youth Club and the
Scouts, have made a 20-minute video about the village, with the help of two
artist-film-makers from Transition Media Arts. Residents of all ages were
interviewed, comparing life here in the 1950s with the present day. Some ciné
footage from 1958 was included to show how much things have changed.
The group
learnt camera and editing skills, whilst producing a film which raises awareness
of issues of concern to young people living in rural areas; it will also be of
general interest to local residents.
The project was
funded by Lincolnshire County Council and the Community Council of Lincolnshire
through the Rural Acts Fund.
A free public showing of the video will take place at Bassingham Youth Club on Wednesday 20th June (2001).

The
pack has had a very successful year so far, we came third in the Cub Football
Cup, had a successful Night Hike at Easter, and have been working towards our
Science Badge, the highlight of which was making propeller-driven cars and
racing them. We were honoured to have two of our cubs, George Brewer and James
Beeson, chosen to escort the District Flag at the front of the St George’s Day
Parade to the Cathedral.
We have a

Bassingham Cub Scouts Cross Country Success
Bassingham Cubs took part in the Lincoln & District Cub Cross Country Race on 13th March. They came first in the team event for both the Over 9½s and the Under 9½s. The individual results were equally impressive:
Under 9½s: 1st Alastair Weir, 2nd Jake Mammatt, 3rd Ross Taylor, 5th Charlie Brewer
Over 9½s: 1st Linton Taylor, 2nd Callum Weir, 13th Daniel Brooks.
Report by Jake Mammatt (age 8):
When we arrived, Akela took everybody to have a look at the map of the course. The under 9½s had to do two laps around the cricket pitch; the over 9½s had to do one lap around the cricket pitch and one round the horse field. Akela and Dougie took us for a walk round the cricket pitch so that we knew the course. First up were the under 9½s. Jake and Ali took the lead and Ross soon caught up. After a while, Ali was in the lead by a few metres, followed by Jake then Ross. Ali won, Jake second, Ross third and Charlie fifth, but still very good. After that, were the over 9½s. After the frist lap, Linton was in the lead, followed by Callum, then Daniel. Daniel dropped behind but he still finished thirteenth, giving Bassingham both of the cups. [WS April 05]

Are there Beaver Scouts in Bassingham?
Bassingham Scout Group - Beaver Leader Needed Urgently
The Bassingham Scout Group urgently need a Beaver Leader For the Beaver Colony to continue a warranted Leader or Assistant Leader is required. The Beavers are aged between 6 and 8 years and meet on a Wednesday night in Bassingham Village Hall. Duties are to work alongside the current Leader in the planning and running of the colony. Some months
ago, we asked any potential Beaver Scouts who would like a colony in Bassingham
to ask their parents to contact the current scout leaders, especially if their
parents would also like to help run the colony. Since that article appeared in
The Witham Staple, all has gone very quiet; no ‘beavers’ have emerged. We
appreciate that ‘beavers’ hibernate during the winter, however, now that
spring is here and a long hot summer beckons, we are again hoping to hear that
‘beavers’ have emerged from their winter sleep and are in this area.
Beaver Scouts
learn how to play together, help others and be good. They don’t camp, but do
have ‘sleep-overs’.
[WS

Like
other Scout groups, we aim to encourage the physical, mental and spiritual
development of youngsters, using a mixture of games, activities and learning new
skills. We are currently a smallish group —22 Cubs and 5 Scouts, and we would
welcome any youngsters wishing to join, especially in the 10 to 14 Scout age
group. We are fortunate in having a range of camping equipment that we try to
use several times a year, and a number of canoes, thanks to a Lottery grant.
We
have been asked if there is a Beaver Colony for the 6 to 8 year-olds. Currently
there isn’t, owing to a lack of leaders. However, if any adult is willing to
be part of a team running a beaver colony, we would be very grateful, give all
the encouragement and assistance we can, and ensure that the District Beaver
Team also help with advice, ideas and programmes.

It
is announced with regret that the Youth Club will close due to lack of support,
unless a new committee can be formed with sufficient helpers to attend weekly
sessions. The Club has been well attended but it is a legal requirement that
there should be two adult helpers for each session. The committee wishes to
thank all those who have helped in any way, including Dick and Dot Richardson,
who recently held a bingo that raised over £200 for Youth Club funds, and John
Brogan, without whom the Club would not have started. Unless somebody is
willing to take over the Club, the remaining funds will be used to provide
children’s entertainment at the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations in June. If you
are interested in forming a new youth club, please contact Margaret Hutchinson

1st Bassingham Guides Can You Help?
Bassingham Guides
Here at Bassingham guides we are here to help our fellow persons! But we can’t
do that without our leaders! At Bassingham guides we only have two leaders and
about 20 girls; now I don’t know about you but sometimes we can get a bit lively
and at times it’s hard for our leaders to get us all to listen at once. Please
come and try and see what our guides are like! Its loads of fun; but since we
only have two leaders there are no more spaces for other girls to join our
guides and this isn’t fair. We are looking for new guide leaders who like to
play, have fun and mess about at the right times! Help us and we can get more
girls into guides! Then we can spread the joy and fun!
