No Name Lodge And The Beavers
The
October 8th edition of the Lincolnshire Echo carried a paragraph and
a photograph of the newly formed Bassingham Beavers, a group of 6 to 8 year old
boys, this came to the attention of the members of the No Name Lodge RAOB.GLE
one of the oldest local factions. Thinking that this was worthy of some support
and encouragement they made a donation of £100 to help this worthwhile project
get off the ground.

been full we are now able to invite parents to help us update the list by
expressing an interest in joining either pack.
For information the age at which we accept Beavers is
6years old and 8 years old for the Cub pack.
Beavers meet on a Wednesday evening in Bassingham Village Hall 6pm to 7.15pm and
the Cubs at the same location on a Monday 6.30pm to 8pm.
If you have any queries please speak to any of the
committee or if you simply want to add your child to the waiting list please
phone Pat Doody (membership officer) on 788964.
As ever we are always on the lookout for parent helpers/leaders and their children are given priority in joining so please also consider this and let us know.

1st Bassingham 30th Lincoln Cub Pack
Many parents will be aware of the difficulties I have had admitting children between 8 and 10½ into the Cub pack. The problem will be worse at the end of the summer term when I will be the only warranted leader which will cap the number of cubs I am authorised to look after to 30. With the current planned admittance of 4 Beavers the numbers are currently 31, in 2006 there are only 4 Cubs reaching Scouts and thus freeing up just 3 places. Demand for those places is not only from Beavers reaching Cub age but children who have been on the Cub waiting list for a long time. Following the A.G.M. the group have put in place an admission policy, which was, printed in the Witham Staple September 2005 edition.
The only way we can admit those keen to join the pack is for someone to come forward who either already holds a leaders or assistant leaders warrant or would be willing to train for one. Please let me know or any member of the committee know if you are prepared to help or just want to discuss what is involved.

Cubs and Scouts: Along with the Brownies, we shall be bag-packing in Asda on Wednesday 22nd December [2004], if you wish to support us - or perhaps avoid us, though we do take a donation for not packing your shopping! [WS Dec 2004]
Bassingham
Scout Group - Helping at Asda
The Cubs, scouts and brownies were at Asda on 22nd December to help people with their shopping. We raised around £600 for funds, which will help pay our fees to National Headquarters. We received many favourable comments on the children's behaviour and we were proud of how hard everybody worked. Here are some of the younger cubs' comments:
"It was very crowded so we had a lot of work to do, so it wasn't any good standing there so we got started.- I was there for two hours! The shop was very busy.- There was a man dressed up as an elf. People bought a lot of wine. - They bought lots of beer. - For lunch I got a packet of crisps and a milkshake. We had a ten minutes off break. - People were spending a lot of pounds - like £500. - The people on the till were very nice. - All the people were very generous, so we raised a lot of money. - I worked really hard and I was so tired. It was very busy but I enjoyed myself. - When we finished we got a Selection Box."
By Jake, Robbie, Alexander, Edward, William, Fraser, Joe. [WS Feb 2005]
We also had some very good drawings by Sam, Ross and Curtis showing the cubs bag packing, too big to put in The Witham Staple though. Thank you all for your contributions. Editor

Bassingham Cubs took part in the Lincoln & District Cub Cross Country Race on 13th March. They came first in the team event for both the Over 9½s and the Under 9½s. The individual results were equally impressive:
Under 9½s: 1st Alastair Weir, 2nd Jake Mammatt, 3rd Ross Taylor, 5th Charlie Brewer
Over 9½s: 1st Linton Taylor, 2nd Callum Weir, 13th Daniel Brooks.
Report by Jake Mammatt (age 8):
When we arrived, Akela took everybody to have a look at the map of the course. The under 9½s had to do two laps around the cricket pitch; the over 9½s had to do one lap around the cricket pitch and one round the horse field. Akela and Dougie took us for a walk round the cricket pitch so that we knew the course. First up were the under 9½s. Jake and Ali took the lead and Ross soon caught up. After a while, Ali was in the lead by a few metres, followed by Jake then Ross. Ali won, Jake second, Ross third and Charlie fifth, but still very good. After that, were the over 9½s. After the first lap, Linton was in the lead, followed by Callum, then Daniel. Daniel dropped behind but he still finished thirteenth, giving Bassingham both of the cups. [WS April 2005]

Bassingham Cubs Conservation Campaign
For the global challenge badge the Bassingham Cubs have taken part in a conservation campaign. We have made posters to do with saving water and energy. The posters will be put up in local shops and around the Cub's houses for the half term. A big poster will also be displayed in the Heritage Room. We hope our poster will encourage people to recycle and save energy. We enjoyed making and putting the pictures on the poster.
Bassingham Cubs [WS Nov 2005]
I was invited to the Cubs meeting to judge their conservation campaign posters recently. The winning poster I picked for the magazine can be seen in November's issue, and also here on the web site in colour. Displayed below are some of the other campaign posters. Well done to the winners and to you all for such a good display of posters.

Trip to see Little Red Riding Hood.
We took the Brownies to see the pantomime Little Red Riding Hood on Saturday afternoon, As usual it was brilliant and they thoroughly enjoyed it. At our next Brownie session we started our writers badge and one of the options to write about was the pantomime. Here are some extracts from their letters.
To Roxy, I liked it when you did the gym club because you had a funny costume.
Dear Prince Rupert, I thought you saved the day and I don't know if you remember but you were one of our teachers.
Dear Bassingham Pantomime & friends, I loved the pantomime and the person who did the makeup was very good. Roxie was good. I can't believe it was a man. Reggie was very funny indeed the top he was wearing was weird. But Rosie was beautiful and had a sweet voice. The wolf was terrifying and I was freaked out I nearly jumped out of my seat. Prince Rupert was very good and Gertrude was funny. Well I liked everyone.
Dear Bassingham Panto, The panto was great. Oh no it wasn't! Rosie was funny and Reggie was silly but Roxie was my most fab person. She was cool and funny and you should have seen her clothes they were wacky. The jogging clothes were cool.
To Roxie, Rosie and Kelly. Roxie you were funny all the time. Rosie you were sweet all the time. Kelly you were funny a little bit not all the time. I cannot believe that Roxie you were a man. Kelly I know you're the prince.
To village person in yellow dress, I recognised you from school. I think it was you.

Bassingham Playpark Project
We would like to say a ‘’Big Thank You’’ to all the volunteers that helped with
the ‘’Parklife Weekend’’ back on 22nd September. This was carefully
timed to smarten up the play park in preparation for the arrival of the new play
equipment by Wicksteed. The day was very productive and although hard work,
resulted in a significant improvement to the appearance of the playpark. The
existing monkey bars, swings and log trail were repaired, the climbing frame
repainted, the toddlers park area weeded/‘’re-barked’’ and the wooden fencing
and equipment stained. It was good to see lots of volunteers working together, a
real team effort! Also, thank you to everyone who helped at and supported the
Car Boot sales in August and September. Although the turn out was slightly
disappointing, every penny counts and we are now able to purchase additional
seating for the playpark.
Hopefully, by the time this in printed, works on site should be underway. During this time, security fencing will be erected around the works and areas of the playpark closed off. The fencing will be in place primarily for safety reasons so please treat the works with respect and DO NOT ENTER the construction area. Our understanding is that the fencing will be wired up to the mains after 6 o’clock at night. Thank you, on behalf of the Playpark Volunteers Group.

As you are aware, a group of 4 volunteers has come together to look at the refurbishment of the Village Play Park, which is looking very tired. Essentially, the aim of this project is to replace some of the children's play equipment, install safety surfacing and seating.
The project is shortly to reach its first milestone in that comprehensive applications for grant funding are soon to be completed and submitted to the relevant organisations. This process has taken several months and has involved input from Bassingham School children and various youth groups and advice from local authorities, play equipment providers and the Police. The target figure that we need to raise is in the order of £50,000, the bulk of which we hope will come from grant applications. In addition, various fund raising activities will soon be competing for your attention! Details will be given in future issues of this magazine. We would be grateful for your support at these events.
We have agonised about investing time and money into a project that may risk the "amusement" of a small minority who see fit to vandalise the village's facilities. However, we are pleased to see the presence and actions of our new Police Community Support Officers who are as determined as we are that the mindless behaviour of a handful of youths should not spoil it for the rest of the village. We cannot let the problem of potential vandalism stop our efforts in securing better play equipment for the young children who want and need it. It is the responsibility of everyone who sees anti-social behaviour to report it accordingly.
For the project to be a success, we would welcome a few more bodies to help with some of the legwork - be it with grant application paperwork, helping with phone-calls, fundraising ideas etc. A little help goes a long way!
Anyone who feels they can offer support to us in any way or can pledge their help for fundraising activities in the future, please contact Steve Gilman on 789072.
