Headteacher Mr Ian Howells

Dear Residents,
I am writing to acknowledge current traffic congestion difficulties on Lincoln Road and to apologise for recent inconvenience, since I am aware that the school has received a small number of complaints.

You may be aware that to park their cars, teaching staff have for some time been using the grassed area by the school reception entrance. However, this area is needed at present for access to the construction site so teachers are currently using the main car park. In any event, parking here was damaging the grass and making the area unsightly so will not be permitted in future.
The effect of this has been to increase demand for parking places in the car park. At peak times, I regret it is inevitable there will be an overspill of demand onto Lincoln Road, as parents arrive to drop off or collect their children. Our winter weather has further exacerbated the problem.

We have a travel plan in school which encourages parents and pupils to walk or cycle to school whenever possible, but in poor weather parents will use their cars. Also, many families live in neighbouring villages so have little alternative but to get in the car. We have written to parents more than once about the need to try to share transport, to park safely and show consideration for local residents and other road users. But overall, I have to accept that the situation is not ideal.

For the future, I can assure you that we will do whatever we can to minimise congestion. In the meantime, if you experience a particular problem, please do not hesitate to bring this to the attention of Mr. Howells, our Headteacher.
Yours sincerely Mike Halloran

Bassingham Primary School Music Week

Bassingham Primary School is having a Music Week from 1st to 5th October. This is an exciting and ambitious project for our school. During the week several musicians and groups will be visiting the school to give workshops and performances to the children. There will also be concerts for children, parents and the community.

On Monday 1st October and Tuesday 2nd October ‘Live Music Now’ will be visiting the school with their “Instruments of the Orchestra Project.” They will be bringing a Percussion Duo, a String Duo, a Wind Trio and a Brass Quartet. Each group will give a performance and workshop to each class and there will be a community concert on Tuesday evening 2nd October. The community concert will be provided free of charge.

On Wednesday 3rd October there will be a ‘Music and Computers’ workshop for each class. The children will be shown how to compose their own music using computer technology.

On Thursday 4th October and Friday 5th October Opera Start will be visiting the school. There will be workshops and performances for the children and this will culminate in a Key Stage Two performance of ‘The Magic Flute’ by Mozart at the Terry O’Toole Theatre in North Hykeham on Friday evening. The concert will be for parents and the local community. It will be free of charge.

The Music Week has been made possible by grants and support from a number of different organisations. These include: The Ernest Cook Trust, The Young People’s Trust Carlton-le-Moorland, The Kochan Trust and North Kesteven District Council. We are extremely grateful for the support they have given.

As you can see, this is a very exciting project for our school. Members of the local community are welcome to attend the evening concerts during the week. We would be delighted to see you! However, tickets are strictly limited for both evening concert events and priority will be given to parents of the children from the school. If you are interested in attending either of the concerts then please contact the school for further information and ticket availability.

Can you help raise funds for our school and help the environment?

We are collecting used printer cartridges, both laser toner and inkjet. The only cartridges not accepted are Epson inkjets or toner bottles.

Here’s how it works…
Simply send in your used cartridges in a plastic bag to Bassingham School. If you know of a business or organisation that uses a large number of cartridges, and are willing to donate their cartridges to the school they can send them directly to the scheme and we can supply pre paid envelopes. The envelopes will hold up to 6 cartridges. Please contact the school for further information.

I hope you will be enthusiastic about this recycling scheme as we are. Please tell your friends, neighbours, family, employer and community groups and start collecting today!

Visit to Church Farm Museum, Skegness

Class I (Reception Year) [Bassingham Primary School]  went with their teacher Mrs Milner to Church Farm Museum on the 2nd May. This trip was planned to round up a variety of themes that the children had covered through their topic work on Changes, Homes and Journeys. The children had a wonderful day with plenty of hands-on experience.

Here are just a few of their thoughts:

 • Phoebe enjoyed the ride in the coach

William liked looking out of the coach window and he saw a windmill

Martha liked making the corn dollies

Hanna really enjoyed making the peg rugs

Ted said he liked playing with the old toys best

Lucy said she liked using the dolly peg to do the washing

Emma thought the old cottage was horrid, with cow poo stuck to the walls.

The class and their parent helpers came home tired but happy, after an exciting day. [WS Jun 2002]

New Headteacher Introduces Himself

My name is Neil Spencelayh and I am writing to introduce myself as the new Headteacher of Witham St Hughs Primary School. I will be taking up my post this Easter, and will be initially based at County Offices in Lincoln until the school building is completed in August, ready for a September 2006 opening. I am very excited about the opportunities and challenges involved in opening a new school, and of creating a school which provides a high quality, rounded education for all children.

For the past 14 years I have lived in Lincoln with my wife Nicola and, more recently, our two young children Ethan (4) and Roan (1). I was brought up in the North Eastern town of Hartlepool, and moved to Lincoln when I began my teacher training course at Bishop Grosseteste College, specialising in mathematics and technology. I have previously worked at Ermine Junior School and Hartsholme Primary School. In January 2004 I took up my current post as Headteacher of Spitalgate C of E Primary School in Grantham, which has recently been through a successful OFSTED inspection.

I am looking forward to meeting and working with members of the Witham St Hughs community and surrounding areas in the near future. If you require any further information about the school or would like to pass on any views about how you would like to see the school develop, please do not hesitate to contact me either at my current place of work or, after Easter, via County Offices. Neil Spencelayh

Lincolnshire County Council held a turf cutting ceremony

This ceremony marked the start of construction of the new 210 place primary school. This £2million + state of the art school is being built to take pupils from the new village under construction on the former air base. It marks the start of a twelve month construction that will mean the new school will open in September 2006.

Almost half the cost is funded by contributions from the site's developer as a result of North Kesteven District Council and Lincolnshire County Council working together to secure this contribution.

The design is by HBS Business Services, the County Council's Strategic Business Partner and is for an ecologically sensitive building including using renewable resources, having a high thermal performance design, using natural but controllable lighting and recycling roof rainwater.

The turf cutting ceremony was carried out by Councillor. Mrs P. A. Bradwell, the Portfolio Holder for Children's Services at Lincolnshire County Council, who made a speech outlining the advantages of the project. The school already has a Temporary Governing Body who will have the task of appointing a Head teacher and other staff ready for the opening in 2006.

Refreshments after the ceremony were generously provided by Westbury Homes who also allowed the use of their show home.

Groundwork is already taking place and it is hoped that by the end of the month the wooden frame of the building will start to be assembled giving local residents an indication of the size and layout of the school.

Parents who wish their children to attend from September 2006 should contact Lincolnshire County Council School Admissions Team for details Tel: 01522 782030, or visit the website www.gtsil.co.uk

Credit Action

It takes a lot of courage to admit you have a debt problem, and even more to seek help. The Christian national money education charity, Credit Action aims to bridge the gap between those in difficulty and the range of services available to help them. There is a free, informal service available to help people to work out their income and outgoings and draw up a personal budget. We know when to refer someone to specialist advice and can support them through that process. Everything is kept strictly confidential. The kinds of people we help can range from someone who is evidently in debt and needs support in accessing an advice service, to someone who is perfectly solvent but wants to identify to give or save more each month. You may be a single parent, pensioner, widow or student it does not matter.

My name is Stewart Logan and I have been attending St Michael's Church in Bassingham since moving here in 1995. some of you may know me as the PCC Treasurer or perhaps as the one who runs the bar at most Church events! For confidential help in working out a budget that meets all your needs, contact me on 788892 and we can meet up for a coffee and a chat. If at the end of our time together the sums still don't add up, we will look forward to a way together. Credit Action highlights the problems caused by poor personal money management and provides practical advice and support to avoid and resolve those problems. The Charity's main aim is to ensure that normal life is not disrupted by money management problems. creditaction.org.uk
